Nike's Controversial New Ad

Nike has proven that they are a one of a kind brand once again in the past two weeks. They have chosen to use Colin Kaepernick as the brands cover athlete. This was a very bold and skeptical decision because he has been involved in a lot of controversy in the past two years. Colin is known for his contributions to the black rights movement. He has been kneeling for the National Anthem before professional football games as a symbol for his feeling of how African Americans are being treated in this country. He has received a lot of backlash from his actions and has been released from his team. When Nike made him the cover athlete for their new ad they also received a lot of backlash. Many people ended up burning their nike products or throwing them away. A lot of people have also stated they will not be purchasing Nike products anymore as long as Kaepernick remains the cover athlete. The day that the ad came out, the firm's share price fell by 3%. However throughout all the backlash and criticism Nike has remained loyal to Colin and are dedicated to helping him get his message heard all throughout the world.

This article goes hand in hand with chapter 4 of the textbook when it talks about making ethical decisions. The book talks about how companies can grow and develop much faster by making smart and ethical decisions. these ethical decisions make the company look better and attracts many more customers. Nike ,on the other hand, made an ethical decision to make Colin Kaepernick their cover athlete, but hurt their brand. Even though their decision hurt their sales, they still stand behind it. They do this because they believe they are doing the right thing by pushing for equal rights for all races. Nike made some ethical decisions and they believe over time it will end up helping them.

One of the lectures in class that this article reminds me of is the presentation given by Sandra Taylor. During her lecture she talked about world business and how working in other countries can be beneficial. I believe Nike is trying to do this with this ad. They are trying to reach out to other countries who are facing some type of discrimination and are trying to spread a good message. Also during her presentation, Sandra Taylor talked about traveling the world and learning about the cultures of other people from different parts of the world and how they differ form yours. Nike is trying to back up Kaepernick and raise awareness for African Americans. They are very much so involved in World Business.
