Guest Speaker Reflection - Michelle Price

The guest speaker that I decided to do my guest reflection on is Michelle Price. She attended Ohio University from 1985-1989 for her Bachelors of Fine arts and then went to Ohio University from 1990-1992 to get her MFA in design. She then went back to Ohio University in 2013 to get her Doctorate in Philosophy. Throughout her career she designed a lot of products, but her most famous was the curly bow. She got a patent on the product so no-one would be be able to copy her idea. Throughout her presentation she talked about product design and the importance of patents. She talked about her experience with multiple product designs and how each idea much be very original and can't be similar to any other products that are currently on the market. Products design is talked about in the textbook through all sorts examples. The textbooks talks about how several different products came to be and how the designers went about creating them. The textbook also talks about patents and how they...

Professional Networking

I attended the Exercise Science Club meeting in November and it was a great way to self-promote and network myself. The meeting was held in the basement of the chapel and was very beneficial. A few upper class members began talking about some of the expectations of being in the exercise science club and that it would be a great way to get our names out there. They went on to talk about a few events we would attend to meet some potential advisors for us while we pursue a career in exercise science. The meeting ended by them asking if we had any questions. I asked about the benefits of being in the club. They said its a great way to network yourself and to get your name out there to professionals in that field. I know the importance of networking yourself from the many discussions we've had about it in our business class. I know that it is very important to get your name out there early so that people that are higher up know about you and how you can potentially help their work pla...

Personal Business Plan

Personal Business Plan - I will be fair and considerate to all of my customers no matter the circumstances Business Enviroment - I will be competing in the Health Sciences field as a Physical therapist. In the overall global environment this field is pretty big because of the numerous jobs that this field includes. Some of the factors that cause supply and demand in this field are the number of people who are inflicted with injuries and also the age of the people that are affected by these injuries. If everyone is healthy and uninjured then there would be no need for physical therapists or anyone in the health sciences field. Entrepreneurship and Strategy - I plan to be an entrepreneur and open my own physical therapy shop in my home town. I want to do this because I want to be my own boss and be in control of what I am doing at all times. Starting up my company I'm sure I'll face many challenges early such as lack of customers, building a brand, and overall trust of custom...

Finding a Role Model

This past week at Chatham I talked to a business graduate student about their experiences here at Chatham, as well as asked for some advice. We talked for awhile about how they started out at Chatham and how they thought it was a great place to come to especially if you're pursuing a career in business. He is a business major who was very involved around campus. He was a part of the entrepreneur club and also part of the golf club in his spare time. We then talked about some good studying strategies and he had some really good advice. He told me to space out my studying for classes throughout the week instead of cramming everything in the night before. This was very helpful information for me because I am used to cramming everything in the night before. Another tip he had for me was to always stay ahead in the class and try to read the chapters before the class started. I was very thankful for this advice and am going to be sure to utilize it during my time here at Chatham. The ...

Nike's Controversial New Ad Nike has proven that they are a one of a kind brand once again in the past two weeks. They have chosen to use Colin Kaepernick as the brands cover athlete. This was a very bold and skeptical decision because he has been involved in a lot of controversy in the past two years. Colin is known for his contributions to the black rights movement. He has been kneeling for the National Anthem before professional football games as a symbol for his feeling of how African Americans are being treated in this country. He has received a lot of backlash from his actions and has been released from his team. When Nike made him the cover athlete for their new ad they also received a lot of backlash. Many people ended up burning their nike products or throwing them away. A lot of people have also stated they will not be purchasing Nike products anymore as long as Kaepernick remains the cover athlete. The day that the ad came out, the firm's share price fell by 3%. Ho...
